João do Boi is one of two brothers who gritam chulas ("holler" in harmony the "sung" portions of Afro-Bahian sambas) in the roots samba group SAMBA CHULA DE SÃO BRAZ (São Braz is a small community located outside of the town of Santo Amaro, Bahia).

Samba Chula is to Brazil what the blues are to the United States, and João is one of this wonderful but dying genre's foremost exponents.
